Getting started

What is StudyNotes AI and how does it work?

StudyNotes AI helps you transform your study materials into interactive learning tools. Scan or import your notes, record lecture audio for transcription, and the app extracts text using OCR and speech-to-text. Then use AI to generate summaries, quizzes, flashcards, and mind maps to enhance your studying.

How do I scan documents or notes?

Tap "Scan Notes" in any project to open the camera scanner. Position your document in the frame and capture. The app will extract text using VisionKit OCR. Review and edit the extracted text before confirming to save it to your project.

Can I import images or PDF files?

Yes! You can import photos from your library using "Import Image" or import PDF files using "Import PDF". The app will automatically extract text from imported files using OCR. You can also manually add text by tapping "Add Text" in the Extracted Text section.

Features

How do I record and transcribe audio?

Open a project and tap "Record Audio" in the Extracted Text section. Speak clearly; when you stop, the app transcribes your recording and appends the text to your project. Free users get up to 5 minutes of transcription in total; Pro subscribers get unlimited transcription. Transcription requires an internet connection.

What AI features are available?

With Pro you get unlimited AI generation. On the free tier you get 7 AI credits for summaries, quizzes, flashcards, mind maps and Study Packs, plus 3 AI Tutor messages and 5 minutes of audio transcription. Projects, scanning, import, and manual text entry are unlimited.

What is the AI Tutor and how does it work?

The AI Tutor is a chat assistant that reads your project's extracted text. Ask questions about your material — it explains concepts and clarifies difficult topics. Free users have a limited number of messages; Pro unlocks unlimited chat. Requires internet.

How do mindmaps work and how can I edit them?

Mindmaps are visual knowledge structures that help you see connections between concepts. The AI generates a radial layout with a central topic and connected branches. To edit a mindmap: 1. Tap "Edit" in the top-right corner 2. Tap any node to edit its title, change its color, or delete it (delete button appears in the edit sheet) 3. Tap the + button on a node to add a new child node 4. Long-press and drag a node (except the root) to move it to a new position 5. Tap "Done" to save your changes You can zoom in/out using pinch gestures or the zoom controls, and pan around by dragging. Each node can have its own color from the palette to help organize and visualize different concepts.

How do I manage images in my projects?

In any project, expand the Images section to see all imported or scanned images. Tap the trash icon to delete an image, or the refresh icon to rescan it. Use "Reorder" mode to drag and rearrange images. Deleting images will update the extracted text automatically.

Can I use the app offline?

You can view saved projects offline. Scanning, OCR, audio transcription, AI generation, subscription purchases, and iCloud sync require an internet connection. Your data is stored on your device.

How does iCloud sync work?

If you're signed in to iCloud, your projects automatically sync across all your Apple devices. Changes made on one device will appear on others. Sync requires an internet connection and may take a few moments to complete.

Does the app have home screen widgets?

Yes! StudyNotes AI includes three home screen widgets: • Small – shows your current study streak • Medium – shows your streak and the next upcoming exam countdown • Large – a full combo view with streak and exam countdown To add a widget: long-press your home screen → tap '+' → search for 'StudyNotes' → choose a size and tap 'Add Widget'. Widgets update automatically whenever you open the app.

Can I edit the extracted text?

Yes! After scanning or importing, review the extracted text in the verification screen. You can also tap "Edit" (or "Add Text" if empty) in the Extracted Text section of any project to manually add or modify text at any time.

Does new text replace or add to my project?

Scanning, importing images/PDFs, and audio transcription append to your existing extracted text — nothing is overwritten. Use Edit in the Extracted Text section to change or remove text manually.

Subscription & pricing

What is the Pro subscription and how much does it cost?

Pro unlocks unlimited projects, scanning, AI generation, audio transcription, image/PDF import, and AI Tutor. In the US storefront it costs $5.99 per month or $39.99 per year — the annual plan saves 44% compared to paying monthly. Both plans include a 7-day free trial. Apple sets its own price tier in each country, so your local price may differ, and the App Store always confirms the exact amount before you are charged.

What can I do for free before subscribing?

Without a subscription you can create unlimited projects, scan and import as many pages as you need, and spend 7 shared AI credits on summaries, quizzes, flashcards, mind maps and Study Packs. You also get 3 AI Tutor messages and 5 minutes of audio transcription. When you reach a limit, subscribe to Pro — all plans include a 7-day free trial through the App Store.

How do I restore my subscription?

Go to Settings → Subscription → Restore Purchases. You must be signed in with the same Apple ID used for the original purchase. If restore fails, ensure you have a stable internet connection and try restarting the app.

Privacy & data

Is my data private and secure?

Yes. Only the text you explicitly submit for AI analysis is sent to OpenRouter/OpenAI. We never send personal identifiers, images, or other metadata. For failed live audio transcriptions, the original recording may be stored temporarily and encrypted on your device so you can retry, export, or discard it; it is not synced to iCloud by this retry feature.

Troubleshooting

What if OCR doesn't extract text correctly?

You can rescan individual images using the refresh button, or use "Rescan All" to reprocess all images in a project. You can also manually edit the extracted text at any time. For best results, ensure good lighting and clear, readable documents.

How do I delete a project or study material?

Hold on a project in the home screen to delete it. To delete AI-generated materials (summary, quiz, flashcards, mindmap), long-press the material card and select "Delete" from the context menu. You can regenerate materials later if needed.

How do I report bugs or request features?

Use the Email Support button above and include screenshots, detailed steps to reproduce the issue, or feature request details. The more context you provide, the faster we can help. Feature requests are prioritized based on user impact and feasibility.
